Since February 2022, the Momentum Country and Global Leadership project (MCGL) has partnered with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to implement Networks of Practice (NoP) in four regions in Northern Ghana. Sixteen NoPs were established based on criteria outlined in the NoP guidelines, considering factors such as geographical locations, sub-district demarcations, human resource capacity, service delivery availability, logistics supply, and infrastructure.
The objectives of the Family Health meeting held by the NoPs were to facilitate dialogue and joint action planning among hubs and spokes for effective network functioning. The meeting also aimed to discuss the pooling of knowledge, experiences, and resources to improve the quality of maternal and new-born health/family planning care (MNH/FP). Additionally, stakeholders were invited to share the concept of NoPs and define their roles in supporting the initiative.
In June 2023, the 16 NoPs conducted a family health meeting to address the stakeholders' varying understanding of the concept and emphasize their roles and responsibilities. Participants included chiefs, licensed chemical sellers, health workers, district and Municipal Health Directorate staff, representatives from the National Ambulance Service (NAS), District Assembly, National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Community Health Management Committee (CHMC), and National Ambulance Service.
During the meeting, the NoPs presented performance data in family planning, maternal and new-born health, and referral feedback. Over ten action plans were developed to strengthen referrals, improve referral feedback, enhance the Community Emergency Transport Service (CETS), collaborate with the NAS and NHIA, and enhance data capture and documentation.
The NoP meetings are designed to be self-sustaining, with each NoP required to hold regular meetings to review best practices and utilize existing health system structures such as clinical and staff meetings. These meetings address issues related to referrals, NHIS claims vetting, community sensitization, and data utilization for decision-making. Each NoP has formed a committee responsible for overseeing the networks' activities.
Through these collaborative efforts and ongoing meetings, the NoPs aim to strengthened healthcare systems and improve health outcomes in the regions involved.
The MCGL peer mentorship was integrated into the networks of practice model to strengthen the clinical competence of health care providers at the hubs and spokes levels. The NoP family health meeting was executed by the Learning Advisor, Salomey Akparibo and the MCGL Master Mentors.
