The Quality Management Unit (QMU) of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS), Sierra Leone, the MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership (MCGL) Sierra Leone Project, and Ubora Quality Institute are organizing a week-long quality improvement (QI) related activities in Sierra Leone.
The activities include Primary Healthcare Unit (September 11th – 16th) and hospital (September 19th – 20th) collaboratives learning session 4, master trainers training (September 21st – 23rd), and 2024 work plan meetings (September 25th – 26th). The MCGL SL project, funded by USAID, has an overarching aim to improve maternal, newborn, and child healthcare in Sierra Leone.
Since 2021, Ubora has been at the forefront of the Quality Improvement (QI) component of the MCGL Sierra Leone project building the capacity of Quality of Care officers (QoC) at the national and district levels, facility healthcare workers, and MCGL Sierra Leone staff in QI methods and tools. Ubora has also played a pivotal role in developing and supporting the implementation of data collection templates at the facility level, developing training materials to facilitate national to cascade QI training nationwide, and offering guidance on sustainable QI strategies and designs.
The week of the Primary Healthcare Unit (PHU) collaborative brought together 89 facilities from 4 districts (Pejuhun-21, Kailahun-24, Western Area Urban-21 and Rural-19) in two separate sessions pairing Pejuhun and Western Urban in the first 3 days (Sept. 11th – 13th) and Kailahun and Western Rural in the subsequent 3 days (Sept. 14th – 16th). Frank Faarkuu and Justina Agula were in the country to support these collaborative sessions.
The sessions offered a platform for the facility improvement teams to share their Improvement (QI) projects and receive feedback from their peers and technical experts who were in attendance, thereby promoting the sharing of best practices and learning. It was also wonderful to see the support and involvement of key figures like Mrs. Hawa Lebbie representing Matron Margaret Mannah, Programme Director of QMU of Reproductive and Child Health Directorate, MoHS and Ms. Najima Bawa, MCGL SL Project Director.
Our team, Dr. Eric Boadu, Jonas Akpakli, Frank Faarku and Justina Agula participated in the World Patient Safety Commemoration Day held at the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital in Freetown and ended the day with a field visit to 2 PHU facilities in Western Urban.
